Most of us have been there. You’re standing at a community event, a neighborhood barbecue, your spouse’s work party, or even just waiting in line for coffee when someone asks the simple question:
“So… what do you do?”

For many people, that’s an easy question.

For business owners and leaders? Not always. We often feel like we need to explain everything.

We start listing services, describing processes, sharing our credentials, and before we know it, we’ve turned a simple conversation into a presentation.

The problem isn’t that what we do is boring. The problem is that we’re trying to answer a question people didn’t ask.

Most people aren’t looking for a complete overview of your business. They’re simply trying to get to know you.

That’s why I believe one of the most valuable leadership skills isn’t just communication; it’s the ability to communicate your value in a way that feels natural, authentic, and memorable.

Your Brand Begins Before Your Marketing

Throughout our Women in Leadership series this summer, we’ve challenged attendees to think differently about branding.

Branding isn’t just:

  • Your logo
  • Your colors
  • Your website

Your brand is built through the experiences people have with you every single day.

It’s how you answer the phone. It’s how you respond to an email. It’s how you treat your team. It’s how you represent your company when you’re wearing a branded polo at a community event.

And yes… It’s how you answer the question:

“So… what do you do?”

Every one of those moments either reinforces your brand or weakens it.

The Best Conversations Create Curiosity

One of my favorite observations is that the most memorable people rarely try to tell you everything. Instead, they tell you just enough to make you want to know more.

They answer the question in a way that creates curiosity.

Instead of ending the conversation, they open the door to the next question. That’s where meaningful relationships begin.

That’s Why We Created This Experience

We have many amazing experiences coming your way at Brand Camp.

One of those is Pitches with Purpose, led by Annette Pieper.

This isn’t about memorizing another elevator pitch. It’s about learning how to communicate who you are and what you do in a way that feels authentic, sparks curiosity, and leaves a lasting impression.

Even better, attendees won’t simply listen to a presentation. They’ll have the opportunity to work with Annette to refine their message, practice it in real time, and receive personalized coaching and feedback.

Whether you’re a business owner, a manager, a salesperson, or someone who represents your organization in the community, this is a skill you’ll use for years to come.

Because your next opportunity probably won’t begin with a sales call. It will begin with a conversation.
